Lesson Title Lesson 9 – Giving out cookies
Standards K.OA.A.3 Decompose numbers less than or equal to 10 into pairs in more than one way, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record each decomposition by a drawing or equation (e.g., 5 = 2 + 3 and 5 = 4 + 1).
Materials Needed Printable – Plate cookies

Crayon

Pencil

Scissors

Glue Stick

Teacher Directions ·       Model how to cut out sandwich ingredients.

·       Explain that the number five can be broken down into different combinations or pairs

·       Show that five can be 4 plus 1 or 3 plus 2 and vice versa

·       Have students decide how to distribute the 5 cookies to the 2 plates.

·       How many combinations are there?

·       Repeat back to them the combination they made

·       Have them color their cookies and plates

Guiding Questions How many combinations can we make out of five?

How do we break apart numbers?

How does addition help us make pairs?

How does subtraction help us make pairs?
