The Bible Story of Prayer
The Bible includes many stories that teach children about prayer.
One important story is the story of Hannah. Hannah wanted a child very much, and she prayed to God with deep emotion. She brought her sadness and hope to the Lord honestly. God heard Hannah’s prayer, and later she became the mother of Samuel.
Another example of prayer comes from Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. On the night before the cross, Jesus prayed to His Father. He was sorrowful and honest about how difficult this moment was, yet He chose to obey God’s will. This story helps children understand that prayer includes trust and surrender.
Jesus also taught about prayer through parables. In the Parable of the Persistent Widow, a widow kept coming to a judge and asking for justice. Because she did not give up, the judge finally answered her. Jesus told this parable to teach that people should always pray and not give up.
In the Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector, Jesus told about two men who went to the temple to pray. The Pharisee proudly spoke about himself, but the tax collector prayed humbly and asked for mercy. Jesus taught that humble prayer is pleasing to God.
The Bible says:
“Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.”
— Luke 18:1
These stories help children understand that prayer can be honest, humble, faithful, and persistent. God invites His people to come to Him in every situation.
