The Bible Story of the Twelve Apostles
Jesus chose twelve special followers called apostles. These men traveled with Him, listened to His teaching, and saw His miracles. The twelve apostles were Peter, Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, Thaddaeus, and Judas Iscariot.
One important event in the lives of the apostles was the Last Supper. Jesus shared a final meal with His disciples and taught them about love, service, and remembering Him.
After Jesus died and rose again, He spent time with His followers before the Ascension. Then Jesus returned to heaven while the disciples watched. Before He left, Jesus told them that they would receive power when the Holy Spirit came upon them.
That promise was fulfilled at Pentecost. The Holy Spirit came upon the believers, and they began speaking in other languages so that many people could hear about God’s mighty works. Pentecost marked the beginning of the church’s mission to tell the world about Jesus.
The Bible says:
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses.”
— Acts 1:8
