The Bible Story of Love and Friendship

The Bible includes many stories that help children understand love, friendship, loyalty, and kindness.

One well-known story of friendship is the story of David and Jonathan. Jonathan was the son of King Saul, but he loved David as a close friend and wanted to protect him. When Saul wanted to harm David, Jonathan helped David know when it was time to leave for safety.

Jonathan used a plan involving arrows to send David a message. Their friendship reminds children that true friends care about one another and try to do what is right, even when it is difficult.

Another story of love and loyalty is the story of Ruth and Naomi. After Ruth’s husband died, Naomi planned to return to Bethlehem. Ruth could have stayed behind, but she chose to stay with Naomi.

Ruth told Naomi that where Naomi went, she would go, and Naomi’s people would become her people. Ruth’s choice showed faithfulness, commitment, and love during a difficult time.

The New Testament also teaches clearly about love. In 1 Corinthians 13, Paul describes love as patient and kind. This chapter helps children understand that love is not only a feeling. Love is shown through actions, attitudes, and the way we treat others.

Jesus also told the parable of the Good Samaritan. A man was hurt and left on the road. Some people passed by without helping him, but a Samaritan stopped, cared for his wounds, and made sure he was taken to a safe place.

Jesus used this story to teach what it means to love our neighbor. The Good Samaritan showed love through compassion and action.

The Bible says:

“Do everything in love.”
1 Corinthians 16:14

These stories help children see that love and friendship are shown through loyalty, kindness, patience, compassion, and helping others.

David and Jonathan’s friendship was loyal and sincere. Jonathan chose to help David even though it was difficult and even though his father, King Saul, was angry with David.

This story is a meaningful way to teach children that friendship includes loyalty, honesty, and caring about what happens to someone else.
