The Bible Story of Daniel
Daniel was a young man from Judah who was taken to Babylon with several other young men. Although Daniel was living far from his home, he continued to follow God.
The king ordered that Daniel and the other young men should eat food and drink wine from the royal table. Daniel decided that he would not eat the king’s food and asked for vegetables and water instead.
After ten days, Daniel and his friends appeared healthier than the young men who had eaten the king’s food. God gave Daniel and his friends knowledge, wisdom, and understanding.
Daniel later became an important leader in Babylon. Other officials became jealous of him, but they could not find anything dishonest or irresponsible in the way Daniel worked.
The officials knew that Daniel prayed regularly, so they persuaded the king to make a law saying that no one could pray to any god or person except the king for thirty days.
Daniel heard about the law, but he continued to pray to God three times each day.
The officials found Daniel praying and reported him to the king. Although the king respected Daniel, the law could not be changed. Daniel was thrown into a den of lions.
The king worried about Daniel throughout the night. Early the next morning, he hurried to the lions’ den and called out to Daniel.
Daniel answered:
“My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions.”
— Daniel 6:22
Daniel was lifted out of the den, and no injury was found on him because he had trusted God.
The Book of Daniel also tells the story of Daniel’s friends Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. The king commanded everyone to bow down before a golden statue, but the three men refused to worship it.
They were thrown into a fiery furnace, but God protected them. When the king looked into the furnace, he saw four figures walking safely inside the fire. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego came out without being burned.
These stories help children understand that following God may sometimes require courage, and that faithfulness means making the right choice even when other people are pressuring us to do something different.
Daniel in the Lions’ Den Craft
The Daniel in the Lions’ Den Craft helps children visualize the best-known part of Daniel’s story.
Children can color and assemble the scene showing Daniel standing safely among the lions. The finished craft creates a simple visual for discussing why Daniel was placed in the den and how God protected him.
For younger children, focus on Daniel’s decision to continue praying and trusting God. Be careful not to suggest that people who trust God will never experience danger or difficulty. The story shows that Daniel remained faithful even though he knew his choice could have serious consequences.
Best for: Preschool, kindergarten, and early elementary
Lesson theme: Trusting God when we are afraid
Bible passage: Daniel 6:16–23
Discussion question: What helped Daniel remain faithful when he was placed in the lions’ den?
Daniel and the King’s Food Craft
The Daniel and the King’s Food Craft introduces children to one of the first choices Daniel made after arriving in Babylon.
The finished activity shows Daniel asking not to eat the food from the king’s table. Children can use the craft to compare Daniel’s choice with what the king’s officials expected him to do.
This story should not be presented as a general lesson that vegetables are always good and other foods are always bad. The main point is that Daniel believed eating the king’s food would compromise his commitment to God, so he respectfully asked for another option.
Best for: Kindergarten and early elementary
Lesson theme: Making faithful and respectful choices
Bible passage: Daniel 1:8–16
Discussion question: How did Daniel stand by his beliefs while still speaking respectfully to the king’s official?
Daniel Praying Craft
The Daniel Praying Craft focuses on the moment Daniel continued to pray after the king’s new law was announced.
Children can color, cut, and move the Daniel figure to show him praying beside his open window. The activity provides a simple way to discuss Daniel’s regular habit of prayer and why he did not suddenly hide his faith.
Daniel did not pray in order to attract attention or cause trouble. He continued doing what he had consistently done before the law was introduced.
Best for: Preschool, kindergarten, and early elementary
Lesson theme: Prayer and faithfulness
Bible passage: Daniel 6:6–10
Discussion question: Why did Daniel continue to pray even though he knew it was dangerous?
Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in the Fiery Furnace Craft
The Fiery Furnace Craft tells the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, three of Daniel’s friends who refused to worship the king’s golden statue.
Children can color and assemble the scene, then open the doors to reveal the men standing safely inside the furnace. The fourth figure provides an opportunity to discuss the way God was present with them in the fire.
The men did not know in advance that they would be rescued. They told the king that God was able to save them, but that even if He did not, they would still refuse to worship the statue. This is an important part of the story because their faithfulness did not depend on receiving the outcome they wanted.
Best for: Kindergarten and elementary children
Lesson theme: Courage and remaining faithful under pressure
Bible passage: Daniel 3:13–28
Discussion question: What did Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego say when the king gave them another chance to worship the statue?
