The Bible Story of Joseph
Joseph was one of Jacob’s twelve sons. Jacob loved Joseph deeply and gave him a special coat.
Joseph’s brothers saw the coat and became jealous. Their jealousy grew when Joseph told them about his dreams.
In one dream, Joseph and his brothers were tying bundles of grain in a field. Joseph’s bundle stood upright, while the other bundles bowed down to it.
In another dream, the sun, moon, and eleven stars bowed down to Joseph.
His brothers believed that Joseph was saying he would one day rule over them, and they became even angrier.
One day, Joseph’s brothers were caring for the family’s flocks far from home. Jacob sent Joseph to find them.
When the brothers saw Joseph approaching, they made a cruel plan. They took away his coat and placed him inside an empty pit. Later, they sold him to traders who were travelling to Egypt.
Joseph was taken far away from his home and family. His life changed completely, but the Bible says:
“The Lord was with Joseph.”
— Genesis 39:2
Joseph faced unfair treatment and spent time in prison, but he continued to act responsibly. God helped him understand dreams, including dreams that warned Pharaoh about a coming famine.
Pharaoh placed Joseph in charge of storing food for Egypt.
Years later, the famine reached Joseph’s family. His brothers travelled to Egypt to buy grain, but they did not recognize Joseph.
Joseph had the power to punish them. Instead, after testing whether they had changed, he revealed his identity and forgave them.
Joseph told his brothers that although they had planned to harm him, God had used the situation to save many lives.
Joseph’s story helps children understand that jealousy can lead to harmful choices, difficult experiences do not determine the end of a story, and forgiveness does not mean pretending that nothing wrong happened.
Joseph and the Coat of Many Colors Craft
The Joseph and the Coat of Many Colors activity introduces children to the beginning of Joseph’s story.
Children can color, cut, and add the decorative coat to Joseph. The activity creates a simple visual for discussing why the coat was important and how Joseph’s brothers reacted to it.
For younger children, keep the lesson focused on jealousy and fair treatment rather than debating whether Jacob should have given Joseph special attention.
Best for: Preschool, kindergarten, and early elementary
Lesson theme: Jealousy and how we treat others
Bible passage: Genesis 37:1–4
Discussion question: How can jealousy affect the way someone treats another person?
Joseph’s Dreams 3D Craft
The Joseph’s Dreams 3D Craft helps children visualize the unusual dreams Joseph described to his family.
The finished scene shows the symbols from Joseph’s dreams, such as the bundles of grain, the sun, the moon, and the stars. Children can use the craft to retell what Joseph saw and explain why his family reacted strongly.
This activity works especially well after reading Genesis 37:5–11.
Best for: Kindergarten and early elementary
Lesson theme: Joseph’s dreams and his family’s reaction
Bible passage: Genesis 37:5–11
Discussion question: Was there a better way Joseph could have spoken to his brothers about his dreams?
Joseph in the Pit Craft
The Joseph in the Pit Craft focuses on the moment Joseph’s brothers allowed their jealousy to turn into a harmful action.
Children can color and assemble the scene while reviewing what happened when Joseph arrived to meet his brothers.
Be careful not to soften the story so much that the central point disappears. The brothers made a serious and deliberate choice to harm Joseph. At the same time, there is no need to give young children disturbing details.
Best for: Kindergarten and elementary children
Lesson theme: Choices have consequences
Bible passage: Genesis 37:18–28
Discussion question: What could Joseph’s brothers have done instead of putting him in the pit?
Joseph Forgives His Brothers Craft
The Joseph Forgives His Brothers Craft focuses on the final part of the story, when Joseph reveals his identity to his brothers.
Children can color and assemble the characters while learning that Joseph chose not to use his position to take revenge.
Forgiveness should not be explained as pretending that the brothers’ behavior was acceptable. Joseph recognized the harm they had caused, but he chose to protect and help his family rather than punish them.
Best for: Kindergarten and elementary children
Lesson theme: Forgiveness and changed behavior
Bible passage: Genesis 42–45
Discussion question: What showed Joseph that his brothers were beginning to behave differently?
