The Bible Story of the Sermon on the Mount

Large crowds followed Jesus as He traveled through Galilee, teaching people and healing those who were sick.

When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to Him, and Jesus began to teach.

Jesus started with a group of teachings known as the Beatitudes.

He spoke about people who might not seem powerful or successful in the eyes of the world. Jesus said that the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek, the merciful, the pure in heart, and the peacemakers are blessed.

Jesus taught His followers that they were the salt of the earth and the light of the world. He told them that a lamp is not lit and then hidden under a bowl. Instead, it is placed where it can give light to everyone in the house.

Jesus said:

“Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Matthew 5:16

Jesus also taught people not to spend their lives worrying about food, clothing, and the future.

He pointed to the birds of the air and the flowers growing in the fields. The birds did not plant crops or store food in barns, yet God fed them. The flowers did not make clothes for themselves, yet Jesus said that even King Solomon in all his splendor was not dressed like one of them.

Jesus told the people:

“Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow.”

He reminded His listeners that God knew what they needed and encouraged them to seek God’s kingdom first.

At the end of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus told a story about two builders.

One man heard Jesus’ words and put them into practice. Jesus compared him to a wise man who built his house on rock. Rain fell, rivers rose, and winds blew against the house, but it did not fall because its foundation was strong.

Another man heard Jesus’ words but did not put them into practice. Jesus compared him to a foolish man who built his house on sand. When the storm came, the house fell.

The Sermon on the Mount teaches children that following Jesus affects how we think, how we treat others, how we respond to worry, and how we live every day.

Jesus Teaches the Crowd Craft

Printable Jesus teaching the crowd Sermon on the Mount Bible craft for kids

The Jesus Teaches the Crowd Craft introduces children to the setting of the Sermon on the Mount.

Children can color and assemble the scene showing Jesus teaching His disciples and the crowd from a mountainside. The craft provides a simple visual for explaining that many of Jesus’ most important teachings were shared during this sermon.

This activity works well as an introduction to the full collection because it helps children understand that the Beatitudes, teachings about worry, letting our light shine, and the story of the wise builder are all connected to Jesus’ teaching on the mountain.

Best for: Preschool, kindergarten, and elementary children
Lesson theme: Listening to Jesus and learning from His words
Bible passage: Matthew 5:1–2
Discussion question: Why do you think so many people wanted to listen to Jesus teach?

The Beatitudes Craft

Interactive Beatitudes Bible craft wheel for Sunday School

The Beatitudes Craft helps children explore the opening section of the Sermon on the Mount.

Children can color and assemble the interactive wheel showing Jesus and the words “Blessed Are”, then turn the wheel to reveal different Beatitudes.

The Beatitudes may sound surprising because Jesus described people as blessed even when they were mourning, suffering, or being treated badly.

This activity can help children understand that God sees people differently from the way the world sometimes does. Jesus taught that mercy, humility, peacemaking, and a desire for what is right are deeply important.

For younger children, it may be helpful to choose two or three Beatitudes to discuss rather than trying to explain all of them at once.

Best for: Kindergarten and elementary children
Lesson theme: The values of God’s kingdom
Bible passage: Matthew 5:3–12
Discussion question: Which Beatitude do you think is easiest to understand, and which one is hardest?

Consider the Lilies of the Field Craft

Consider the lilies of the field printable Bible craft for children

The Consider the Lilies of the Field Craft focuses on Jesus’ teaching about worry and trusting God.

Children can color and assemble the flower craft based on Jesus’ words about the lilies of the field.

Jesus asked His listeners to look at the flowers and notice how beautifully God had clothed them. The flowers did not create their own beauty or worry about what they would wear.

Jesus used this example to remind people that God knows what they need.

This lesson should not be presented as though children should never feel worried. Instead, it provides an opportunity to talk honestly about worry and remind children that they can bring their fears and needs to God.

Best for: Preschool, kindergarten, and elementary children
Lesson theme: Trusting God with our worries
Bible passage: Matthew 6:25–34
Discussion question: Why do you think Jesus told people to look at the birds and flowers?

The Wise and Foolish Builders Craft

Wise and foolish builders house on the rock and sand Bible craft

The Wise and Foolish Builders Craft illustrates the story Jesus told at the end of the Sermon on the Mount.

Children can color and assemble the scene showing one house built on rock and another built on sand. The craft helps children visualize what happened when the storm came.

Jesus explained that the wise builder represents someone who hears His words and puts them into practice.

The foolish builder also heard the words, but hearing alone was not enough. Jesus taught that His followers should live according to what He taught.

The story gives children a clear image of a strong foundation and provides a practical way to discuss obedience and putting faith into action.

Best for: Preschool, kindergarten, and elementary children
Lesson theme: Hearing and practicing Jesus’ words
Bible passage: Matthew 7:24–27
Discussion question: What made the wise builder different from the foolish builder?

Let Your Light Shine Before Others

Matthew 5:16

The large outlined letters give children plenty of room to color.

The illustrations surrounding the verse connect with themes from the Sermon on the Mount and may include a mountain, heart, flower, lamp, house, and other symbols from Jesus’ teachings.

The verse comes from Jesus’ teaching that His followers are the light of the world. Jesus encouraged them to live in a way that allows others to see good deeds and give glory to God.

The coloring page provides a simple way to discuss what it can mean for children to “shine” through kindness, helping others, honesty, forgiveness, and love.
