The Bible Story of Samson
Before Samson was born, an angel appeared to his mother and told her that she would have a son.
The angel explained that Samson would be set apart for God from birth. His hair was not to be cut, and he would begin to rescue the Israelites from the Philistines.
As Samson grew, the Bible says:
“The Spirit of the Lord began to stir him.”
— Judges 13:25
God gave Samson extraordinary physical strength.
One day, while Samson was travelling, a young lion came toward him. Samson had no weapon, but the Spirit of the Lord gave him the strength to defeat the lion.
Samson later became one of Israel’s judges, but he did not always make wise decisions. He often acted quickly, became angry, and trusted people who did not deserve his trust.
Samson fell in love with a woman named Delilah. The Philistine rulers offered her money to discover the secret of Samson’s strength.
Delilah repeatedly asked Samson what made him so strong. At first, Samson gave her answers that were not true. Each time, Delilah tested what he had told her.
Eventually, Samson told her about his hair and explained that he had been set apart for God from birth.
While Samson was sleeping, Delilah arranged for his hair to be cut. Samson’s strength left him, and the Philistines captured him.
They blinded him and forced him to work in prison.
Over time, however, Samson’s hair began to grow again.
The Philistines later brought Samson into a large temple so they could mock him. Thousands of people gathered there.
Samson asked a servant to place his hands against the two central pillars that supported the building.
Samson prayed and asked God to give him strength one final time.
He pushed against the pillars, and the temple collapsed.
Samson’s story is not a simple story about a strong hero. It is also a warning about poor choices, uncontrolled anger, and trusting the wrong people. Samson had received a remarkable gift, but he often used it carelessly.
At the end of his life, Samson turned to God and asked for help.
Samson and the Lion Puppet Craft
Puppet Craft focuses on one of the earliest examples of Samson’s extraordinary strength.
Children can color, cut out, and attach the Samson and lion characters to craft sticks. They can then use the puppets to retell the scene from Judges 14.
The activity gives children a clear visual introduction to Samson, while also helping teachers explain that Samson’s strength was not simply the result of large muscles. The Bible says the Spirit of the Lord empowered him.
Best for: Preschool, kindergarten, and early elementary
Lesson theme: God gave Samson unusual strength
Bible passage: Judges 14:5–6
Discussion question: Where did Samson’s strength come from?
Samson and Delilah Craft
The Samson and Delilah Craft focuses on the moment Samson’s hair was cut while he slept.
Children can color and assemble the scene while learning how Delilah discovered Samson’s secret and betrayed his trust.
This part of the story should be taught carefully. Samson’s hair was connected to his commitment as someone set apart for God, but the hair itself was not a magical object. Samson’s real problem was that he repeatedly ignored warnings and made unwise choices.
Best for: Kindergarten and elementary children
Lesson theme: Trust, temptation, and poor choices
Bible passage: Judges 16:4–20
Discussion question: What warning signs did Samson ignore?
Samson’s Hair Began to Grow Again Craft
The Samson’s Hair Began to Grow Again Craft shows Samson after he had been captured by the Philistines.
The craft features the words:
“But the hair on his head began to grow again.”
— Judges 16:22
Children can color Samson and complete the activity while discussing what this verse means in the wider story.
The growing hair signals that Samson’s story was not yet finished. It does not erase his mistakes, but it prepares children for the final part of the account, when Samson turns to God again.
Best for: Kindergarten and elementary children
Lesson theme: Consequences and turning back to God
Bible passage: Judges 16:21–22
Discussion question: Did Samson’s hair growing again mean that his earlier choices no longer mattered?
Samson Pushes Down the Temple Pillars Craft
The Samson Pushes Down the Temple Pillars Craft recreates the final scene in Samson’s story.
Children can color, fold, and assemble the temple scene so that Samson appears between the two pillars.
Before making the craft, explain that Samson prayed and asked God for strength. This was not simply another display of physical power. Samson understood that his strength depended on God.
Because the temple collapsed and many people died, keep the explanation appropriate for the age of the class. Younger children do not need graphic details.
Best for: Kindergarten and elementary children
Lesson theme: Samson turns to God for help
Bible passage: Judges 16:23–30
Discussion question: What did Samson do before pushing against the pillars?
